Kelsey Brookes!

Aυτό είναι το πρώτο και γαμάτο μου πόστ.χαχαχα.

Ψάχνοντας στο site της RVCA για το ΑrtisticNetworkProgramm ανακάλυψα έναν κύριο εν ονόματι KELSEY BROOKES. O κύριος αυτός είναι ένας ζωγράφος από τη California με πολύ ιδιαίτερο και προσωπικό ύφος στα έργα του. Αντλεί την εμπνευσή του από τη βουδιστική και ινδουιστική φιλοσοφία, το ζωικό βασίλειο και το σεξ δημιουργώντας πραγματικά ξεχωριστά έργα. Αυτό όμως που με ιντρίγκαρε απίστευτα με τον kelsey ήταν όταν διάβασα στο βιογραφικό του το πως κατέληξε να ασχολείται με τη τέχνη.. Αφού ήρθα σε επαφή μαζί του, έμαθα ότι μέχρι τα 25 του δούλευε σαν βιολόγος για την αμερικανίκη κυβέρνηση και εντόπιζε ιούς. Aπό παλιότερα όμως ζωγράφιζε και από ακόμα πιο παλιά του άρεσε να κάνει surf. Ετσι μετά από ένα καλοκαίρι που πέρασε στην ακτογραμμή της Αυστραλίας μένοντας στο αμάξι του κάνοντας surf και ζωγραφίζοντας όλη μέρα αποφάσισε να δώσει άλλη κατέυθυνση στη ζωή του. Ποστάρω και κάποια τμήματα της συζήτησης μας.(Ναι, βαριέμαι να μεταφράσω.)


What pushed you in the decision to leave your scientist job and pursue a career in art and how the heck did you manage getting on the scene so fast?

Man, thats really a tough question dude. I switced from science to art after working as a scientist for five years. I was 25 years old and i saw myself as a dumb guy sitting by the water machine in the office. So i decided i would be happier as a painter and tried to switch my professional focus. The logic i followed was this. Life seems to have no purpose and if it has no purpose then i am free to do what i want. I want to surf and paint. Because of my age i cant be a professional surfer so i will become a painter.
More practically speaking I had saved up some money while working as a
scientist. Enough money to live (rent, food etc.) for one year with out
making any money. So when I quit my paying job I would not have to freak
out about money right away.

This was a long decision that evolved over a few years. It was by no
means easy or thoughtless but it was one of the best decisions of my life.

So having quit your scientist job how did you manage to make a name on the scene and start making a living from painting?

As i said i had enough to live for one year without making any money. So i focused on my art and my goal. I made an account in every website that existed out there for artists to show their work. I also printed small zines with my work and distributed them wherever i could. Once in a while i drove down to LA and leave these zines at galleries i liked.
On the first year i did smth like 40 shows. Well not real shows as they were mostly like cofeeshop or icecream shop exhibitions etc. Hahaha. But generally it took me 2 or 3 years in order to start getting recognized and make solo shows.

Did you think that never going to art school has been a drawback for you?

Well i dont really know i dont really think about it. Before going to art school one should consider if he'd be a good fit or not. Many artist go to art school and then drop out. Well i dont think id be a really good fit. Hahaha. Also what i really love in the process of painting is figuring out how to do this or that what materials should i use etc. It gives you a sense of freedom.


Ελπίζω να πήρατε μια ιδέα. Ο kelsey ζωγραφίζει ακόμα στο γκαράζ του ενώ συμμετέχει σε εκθέσεις ανα τον κόσμο. Εκπροσωπείται και αυτός στις γκαλερί και βέβαια από τον Steve Lazarides με καλλιτέχνες όπως οi banksy, david choe, mark jenkins κλπ. Και είναι ίσως ένας απτους πιο συμπαθητικούς και χαλαρούς τύπους που έχω αράξει να μιλήσω έστω και απτο ιντερνετ.
